West Virginia Can't Wait

2020

Thank you for considering me for House of Delegates for District 38. I was born and raised in West Virginia, and I've lived in Cross Lanes for the last 30 years. This is where I've raised all of my children. This is the place we call home.

West Virginia can't wait. We're losing our population in a steady exodus of good people who don't want to leave.

Let's work together to improve our district and our lovely state. Let's give our young people a stable and growing economy, a healthy environment, and a culture that is diverse and uplifting for all who choose to stay.

I look forward to gaining perspective from you as I venture into the world of politics. I hope to bring some hillbilly logic to our state capital and simplify some of our most pressing and complex issues.

My platform is teamwork.

Issues & Political Concerns

Time for Change

Education

The future of West Virginia belongs to our children. I've been teaching science since 1994, and it's been a truly fulfilling career. My classrooms have welcomed students of diverse backgrounds, as well as many levels of cognitive abilities. Diversity within a free public education is paramount to our success as a community.

Every student has value, which doesn't depend on state or federal funding, and certainly doesn't depend on profits for charter schools. No. Their value can't be quantified by such superficial means.

I have four children of my own, two of whom have autism. Raising children with special needs in the public school system has taught me lessons and given me perspective that I hope to bring to the community by fighting for the programs and strengthening support for our educational system.

We can work together to determine costs, and we can discern the best ways to allocate funds. I'm offering to you my expertise as an educator and mother to weigh current issues and find tangible solutions for them.

Public education is free, AND it has value. It's time we treat it as the most important investment we can make in the future of West Virginia.

The Opioid Crisis

I don't know anyone whose life hasn't been touched by the opioid crisis. I've lost people to overdose. I've lost people to addiction, who are trapped in a parallel world that's foreign to me. The heart-wrenching loss has spurred me to learn what I can, not so much about the drugs, but about recovery. I've never had to recover from opioid addiction, and my perspective is, admittedly, limited. So, I ask successful people questions and learn how they brought themselves from using drugs daily to recovering from their addiction. Luckily, each of their answers, though expressed differently, are very similar in theme. I've connected with people who have devoted their lives to helping others recover, to educating others, children and adults, about prevention. I've learned from law enforcement, healthcare workers, and social service providers.

My hope as delegate is to relay this information and give it substance in the form of programs and support systems, essential to the recovery process. For an issue as complex as addiction, with varied backgrounds leading to drug use and at least as many methods users have attempted and failed, I hope to bring a grounded, balanced, and simplified approach to developing support programs that best empower addicts to return to our world, to recover, to thrive!

I'm truly passionate about this issue, as it's one that impacts so many people all over West Virginia.
